Frequently Asked Questions
How is it ensured that privacy is not compromised?
Data providers serve only anonymised information. Additionally, we perform a second anonymisation when we receive the data, in order to ensure that no personally identifiable information can be recovered. The information delivered to our customers only includes aggregated activity and travel information, so that the privacy of personal data is fully guaranteed.
Do mobile network operators offer similar services on their own?
Different value chain configurations are possible, and some mobile network operators provide activity and mobility information based on their own data. Our value chain approach is described more in detail here.
A particular mobile network operator can only capture the mobility of a certain percentage of the population, how does Kineo ensure the representativity of the sample and the reliability of the results?
Kineo provides information based on a sample of the total population, and therefore the way activity and mobility information is expanded is of paramount importance. We address this issue by means of proprietary algorithms that combine the data from mobile devices with data extracted or inferred from other sources to build a representative sample and expand it to the total population under study. Special care has been put to validate our algorithms by comparing our results with those provided by other well-established and widely accepted methods, such as household travel surveys, as well as to assess the limitations inherent to the different types of data and quantify the uncertainty of the resulting information at different spatial and temporal scales. Finally, it is important to note that the information we provide always includes an analysis of the representativity of the sample.
What are the limitations of the technology?
The type of information we can provide and its level of accuracy are largely determined by the characteristics of the primary data available for each application. Each data source has its pros and cons: mobile technologies, for example, capture end-to-end trips, but distinguishing a user’s travel mode is not always possible; public transport cards provide detailed information on public transport modes, but they say nothing about other legs of the trip (e.g., the walking leg) and may therefore not capture the origin-destination pair; other data sources may help identify more precisely the purpose of certain trips, but they typically provide lower temporal resolution. In addition to data from mobile networks, we make extensive use of publicly available datasets and work together with our customers to make the best possible use of their own data, with the ultimate goal of providing as rich and precise information as possible.
What is the price of the proposed solutions?
Our solutions provide significant cost savings versus conventional data collection methods, such as surveys. The price of each study is determined by a variety of factors, including the geographical area and the population of interest, the period of time under study, and the required temporal and spatial resolution. If you are interested in receving more detailed information about any of our solutions, please contact us and we'll get back to you soon.
